Potty Training: When and How to Start
1 July 2026 · 6 min read
Potty training is a milestone every parent eventually navigates. With the right timing and patience, it can go far more smoothly than you'd expect. Here's a practical, step-by-step guide.
Signs of readiness
- Stays dry for 2-hour stretches
- Shows signs before needing to go (facial expressions, fidgeting)
- Can follow simple instructions
- Can sit down and stand up independently
- Shows discomfort with a wet or dirty diaper
When most children are ready
Every child is different, but most show readiness between 18 months and 3 years. Girls sometimes show readiness a bit earlier than boys, though this isn't a universal rule.
A step-by-step approach
- Introduce a potty chair and let your child explore it without pressure
- Encourage regular sitting attempts (after meals, before bed)
- Praise success; don't scold accidents
- Transition from diapers to underwear gradually
- Keep a consistent routine — inform daycare/school too
Common mistakes to avoid
- Starting too early, before your child shows readiness
- Punishing accidents — this increases anxiety and resistance
- Comparing your child to others
- Expecting consistency too quickly
Regression (accidents returning) is also normal, especially during stressful periods or big changes (a new sibling, new school). Stay patient and keep the process low-pressure.
