When Should NEET/JEE Preparation Actually Start?

1 July 2026 · 6 min read

NEET (medical) and JEE (engineering) are among India's most competitive entrance exams. Starting preparation at the right time can meaningfully improve outcomes. Here's a practical timeline.

When to start

Most experts recommend serious preparation from Class 11, when the NCERT syllabus directly aligns with these exams. Some students start foundation courses from Class 9-10 to build strong basics — helpful, but not mandatory.

A class-wise approach

  • Class 9-10: build a strong foundation — focus on clearly understanding concepts, not memorization
  • Class 11: thoroughly cover the NCERT syllabus, practice basic problem-solving
  • Class 12: advanced problem-solving, mock tests, previous years' papers, revision

Benefits of early preparation

  • More time to cover the syllabus without rushing
  • Time to build deep conceptual understanding, not just cramming
  • Growing familiarity with exam patterns and question types
  • Less last-minute pressure, and less stress overall

What to avoid

  • Starting intense pressure too early (Class 8 or before) — risk of burnout
  • Ignoring the regular school curriculum in favor of exam prep alone
  • Following purely parental expectations while ignoring your child's interests and aptitude
  • Overloading on coaching classes — self-study time matters just as much

Every child's pace is different. What matters most is consistent, well-planned preparation — starting early alone doesn't guarantee success.
